Start from Orissa, Jharkhand or Chhattisgarh villages..

Do not try Bihar villages - you would get reformed !!I want to help a village in India...in any way possible....i need advice where to start,,, am from the US!?
you can work through any NGOs(Non Government Organisations) in the district you want to work in. An NGO named: 'Aagaz charitable foundation', works in Punjab(Ludhiana) for upliftment and empowerment of women and children in rural areas...you can Google them. Theres NGOs who help people in various issues, so maybe you'd better just check out indianNGOs.com, they have a database of all NGOs in India based on the issues each one deals with(women empowerment, child labour, energy supply, education etc) and you can contact them through the info given there.Plus if you contact one NGO and ask them about the specific kind of help you want to give, they will surely direct you to the right people you could talk to. Hope this helps...
i appreciate your kind thought, thank you very much for your consideration to India.

my suggestion is, you can try anything that can educate many illiterates of these rural villages and the literate one, a computer literate.
my best wish for your success. yes there are lot of village which do not have a basic minimum facility . just search a village where you can make your contribution in a way that it benefit the whole village. there are lot of government scheme where you can adopt a village and in some state if somebody come forward with a scheme of funding any project up to 25% then the government is ready to pay the balance 75% . you must have some big dream so first think what project i have to do and what to do and when to do and by whom it will be . it will be better if you plan everything before . if 1% of our people start thinking like you we can yes we can change the whole india life style and there won't be any person below poverty line and there won't be any more sucide in india because of poverty. hats off to you . single drop of water make a ocean. let start with you and lot will come forward and it will be a india which we are looking. the biggest problem in this is to change the mind setting of the people . if we can do that then there won't be a single person in india below poverty of line. they need counciliing not money we have to change there mind setting then only we can get sucess.
my suggestion would be go to punjab map and pick a village then go there and see ur self first dont tell any one what ur plan is first study the area then pick a right person and plan. if u r totaly new about punjab then send me ur email i will guid u i just came from punjab u r right there r so many ways u can help.
the Ramakrishna Mission do loads of good work - education, health, children - you could try getting in touch with them - they have many centres in the US as well, have a look at http://www.vedantauk.com/centres.htm which should make it easier for you
I think you should go through an NGO to get the proper info.
Depending on the budget,u can visit Hyderabad (A.P)

U can see Hyderabad n also visit near by rural areas n do

some thing to backward areas /agriculture oriented villages.

You may get in touch with any registed Non-Govt Organization (NGO) like Avigna Foundation. avignafoundation@yahoo.com
awwwwwwwww! how sweet! we need ppl lyk u in this world!
start with sanitation, toilets;roads;bore wells,.. even orphanages /daycare centre. try to take local help . your intention is good but the work is stupendous self sacrificing, i can help you in locating trustworthy ngo's .i am in texas for the present
join rotary and suggest they sponsor a matching grant for a specific project.

the indians themselves know what they need most and they use the money very wisely that is matched.

one of the sites i went to was a village of people that lived in a landfill (garbage dump) and the rotary was building the people real houses instead of shacks and outside of the landfill. they had also installed water spickets to get clean water to the people, job training programs, and education and cleaning up the area.

this is the best way to go
Punjab is rich indeed by Indian standards. Why not choose a village in a much poorer state, like Orissa, to start with? A friend of mine adopted a struggling village near Dhenkanal (in Orissa) and in 6 years' time he is only too happy with the results.

Bibhu
Try to help in Andhra Pradesh region - in Bhadravaram (Post), Yelleshwaram (Mdl), East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh
Its a good idea,

i think start from villages of backward states like Bihar,up,orissa, eastern states etc
